Fire Door upgrading using our Fire Retardant Varnish - for 30 Minutes of Door Fire Protection (covers FD20 and FD30)

Basic Rules for buying the Fire Varnish system

* cannot be applied over existing paint, varnish, wax or stain - ONLY onto bare wood that does not repel water

* doors must be solid, not hollow

* minimum door edge thickness = 35mm

* minimum panel thickness = 16mm

* base coats (3 x intumescent) and top coats (2 x finish) must all be applied - base varnish or finish varnish may not be used alone

* expect the wood to change shade and or colour - all types of varnishes will have some effect on appearance

* read the Warnings below - do not proceed with coatings without consulting us

Preparation

Sand down all surfaces to a matt finish and test with individual water droplets - if the droplets collapse immediately you have a suitable surface. Now test with a small patch of normal emulsion paint. If the emulsion dries flat and smooth your prepared surface is good enough for application of the Intumescent Base Coat. If the emulsion does not dry properly the surfaces are not ready for the Intumescent Base Coat - call us for advice on 01626 872 886. Once the doors pass the emulsion test try a small patch test of the Intumescent Base Coat and when hard follow with the finish varnish.

Method

First apply the transparent, intumescent (swells in fire) satin base coats (3), using our Intumescent Varnish This is used for bare, clean timber and timber product doors when being upgraded into Fire Doors. Then apply the clear finish coats (2) using our Flame Varnish which is available in satin or matt. Fire Varnish can only be used as part of a door upgrade to FD30.

Important - we will only supply Fire Paint or Fire Varnish for Door Upgrades if you have received our Door Upgrade Specification (free of charge - call 01626 872886 ) and then completed our Door Upgrade Building Inspector Permission Form. This is to avoid the risk that your Building Inspector may refuse the upgrade, which could cost you a lot of wasted time and money.

Warnings - do not apply over existing paint or varnish. Fire Varnish may cause some timbers to yellow slightly - mix a small amount and apply to a test area before mixing a whole pack. Inadequate surface preparation can lead to 'cissing' - a defect in which freshly applied varnish recedes from the surface leaving small circular or streaky bare areas. The usual cause is a water repellent surface due to an existing coating (oil, wax, paint, varnish, etc.) or a lack of surface cleaning. Always test a small patch before proceeding - allow the product to fully dry, apply the top coat(s) and then check for finish and colour before proceeding with the whole area.

Stripped Doors - doors stripped using chemicals may still have chemical and paint/varnish residues on the surfaces. These contaminants can cause:

1. Sissing - gaps in the paint or varnish film where the surface has repelled the coating - these gaps go right through down to the previous coat or bare surface

2. Dimples - hollow spots where during the drying out process the contaminants have reacted with the coating - these are depressions and do not go down to the previous coat or bare surface

Apply three coats of Intumescent Varnish - Base Coats - one 20 square metre pack will cover about 4 door sides with 3 coats. This is based on coating each softwood (typically Pine) door on one side only, for indoor use, for a 35mm thick door with 16mm thick panels, 1.6 square metres area including edges.

Apply two coats of Flame Varnish - Finish Coats - Satin and Matt - one 20 square metre pack will cover 6 door sides with 2 coats. This is based on coating each softwood (typically Pine) door on one side only, for indoor use, for a 35mm thick door with 16mm thick panels, 1.6 square metres area including edges.

Warnings - do not apply over existing paint or varnish. May cause some timbers to yellow slightly - mix a small amount and apply to a test area before mixing a whole pack.
